What should I expect at my first massage appointment?

Your initial visit includes a thorough health history, physical and postural assessment.  Health questions are necessary to develop a safe, effective, and individualized treatment plan, as well as for safety since there are some conditions where massage is not appropriate. All personal information is kept private and confidential.

What are my rights regarding informed consent?

Informed consent is a requirement by law prior to the treatment, and any questions or concerns are encouraged throughout the treatment in order to maintain the clients comfort. Dialogue is encouraged between the client and the therapist so that you get the best possible treatment.  The Massage Therapist will go over with you the individualized treatment plan including the areas of the body that they will be working on. Keep in mind the treatments can be modified or stopped at any time if the client wishes.

What should I wear for my massage?

Clients are asked to undress only to the level of their comfort. During the treatment you will be covered by a sheet at all times except for the specific area being worked on.  Massage can be performed on top of clothing if necessary, however it restricts the therapist from using certain techniques, and may be less effective for some conditions.

Is massage painful?

The amount of pressure and depth used by the therapist will always remain within your pain tolerance.  The therapist can be both firm and gentle depending on the preference of the individual client and the condition of the tissues, and the therapist will inquire periodically about your comfort level and adjust the pressure accordingly. The RMT will never work past your pain threshold.
